Recreatiepark De Eikenhof is located near the 3,000 hectare National Park 'De Weerribben'. This environment has the necessary surprises in store every season. You can endlessly cycle along the golden reed beaks, vast meadows over historic polder dykes. You can laze or stroll through the forest and heathland without being worried. 'Whispering' is something unique that the Weerribben-Wieden area has a patent on. You can visit Kalenberg, a beautiful unspoilt water village or the visitor center in Ossenzijl, where you can see and how the otter is reintroduced in the Weerribben area. A few kilometers away is Giethoorn, the 'Venice of the North' and the fortified town of Steenwijk.
A stone's throw away is Oldemarkt and along the old Zuiderzee route you will find the inviting towns of Blokzijl and Vollenhove, where canons and barrels are the only witnesses of the threatening sea still standing. A visit to Schokland tells you a lot about the history of the former Zuiderzee. In Luttelgeest there is a covered orchid farm with butterfly garden where you can spend a day indoors in bad weather. A little further, but certainly worth it is National Park 'the Dwingelerveld' in Drenthe. The Dwingelerveld consists mainly of coniferous forests and partly of heathland with sheep herds. There are several cycle paths in the area and there is a beautiful hiking trail network.
Also special are the Dolmens in Havelte and a number of nature reserves in the immediate vicinity. For example, about 20 kilometers north-east of Steenwijk, partly in Drenthe, partly in Friesland, is the 'Drents-Friese Wold'. The afforestation is interspersed with open shifting sands, heather fields and fens.
There are many possibilities for children in the area. in Emmen, for example, is the new Wildlands animal park, where young and old can enjoy for a day. The Walibi theme park is located in the Flevopolder, the Slagharen theme park is in Slagharen. In Heerenveen you will find the indoor ice rink Thialf and the indoor playground Ballorig.
